The Impact of the Clean Development Mechanism on Firms: Evidence from India

Policy Brief no. 103-17

The Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM) has the potential to drive the growth of clean and
sustainable technology in developing countries such as
India. However, it is not particularly effective in its current
form. The CDM therefore needs to be given a more
explicit technology transfer agenda. More investment is
also neededto improve the capability of firms to adopt
and use green technology. Such an approach is vital as,
withappropriate reforms, the CDM can be turned into
a valuable instrument to promote the diffusion of such
technology in developing countries.
