SANDEE celebrated a decade of capacity building in Environmental Economics research and teaching
Godavari, Lalitpur: About 150 leading economists from all over the world gathered in Godavari in Kathmandu on December 6-7, 2010, for the ‘Environment and Development in South Asia' conference organized by the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE). Academicians and policy-makers from the South Asia region were involved in debating and discussing their research findings with their counterparts from East Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
This conference celebrated a decade of research and training spear-headed by SANDEE. The invited scholars and policy makers not only presented their own work but also discussed the future research and training needs of the region. About 70 papers were presented and discussed at this conference from topics ranging from Health, Common Property Resources to Climate Change.
Dr. Mahesh Banskota, Dean the School of Arts, Kathmandu University inaugurated the conference on the 6th of December. The Inauguration was followed by the Founder's Address by former director and Professor Emeritus of the Beijer Institute Karl Goran Maler. Other senior economists participating in the conference were Prof. Yoginder Alagh, Chairperson of SANDEE and former minister of the Government of India, members of the Planning Commissions of Bangladesh and Bhutan. The Asia Foundation, ICIMOD, IDRC, Sida, NORAD, UNDP, UNEP, DFID and the World Bank are co-sponsors of this conference. Noble Laureate Elinor Ostrom addressed the conference on the 7th of Dec.
