SANDEE held its second research and training meeting at Dhulikhel, Nepal from September 21-24, 2000. Approximately 40 participants from the SAARC region and outside participated in this meeting. The main objective of the meeting were to discuss research proposals submitted to SANDEE and to assess the training needs and opportunities within the region.
Twenty research scholars from different countries in South Asia presented their research ideas to peers, invited senior scholars and SANDEE's advisory committee members. The research proposals touched on local and regional policy themes and broadly fell into SANDEE's three research categories of Poverty and Natural Resource Management, Economics of Environmental Health and Sharing of Transboundary Resources. Of the research proposals presented, 3 were on Nepal, 12 on India, 2 on Pakistan, 1 on Bangladesh and 1 was a joint Indian-Bangladeshi proposal on the Sunderbans. Based on the research proposals presented, SANDEE's technical advisory committee members decided to make six research grants.
